The Safest Year Ever for Jet Age Airline Travel

Global Commercial Flight Incidents Down

According to a story published in the Wall Street Journal, 2012 was the safest year for commercial airline travel since the beginning of the jet age Convair : Model 340in the early 1960′s.  As per the WSJ:

The number of fatal crashes was down worldwide last year. There hasn’t been a fatal accident on U.S. airlines since 2009.

These days it is considered a truism that air travel is a much safer mode of transport than any other.  However, at Debunk King, we were wondering what the actual numbers are.  Looking for a source of information, we came across these numbers published by Alycidon Rail.

Fatalities by Billion Kilometers Traveled

  1. Air – 0.05
  2. Bus – 0.4
  3. Rail – 0.7

Based on these numbers, air travel by kilometer is 62 times safer than by car and 2,178 times safer than motorcycle travel.
