10 Occupations with Unemployment Rates Less Than 1%

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) issues information on 500 different occupations on an annual basis.  These occupations are shown with their unemployment rates for the current year and compared with the previous year.  If you are keeping track of such things, here are ten (10) occupations which have an unemployment of rate of less than 1% for 2012:

  1. Astronomers and physicists – 0.3%
  2. Directors, religious activities and education – 0.3%
  3. Biomedical engineers – 0.4%
  4. First-line supervisors/managers of fire fighting and prevention workers – 0.4%
  5. Petroleum engineers – 0.6%
  6. First-line supervisors/managers of correctional officers – 0.6%
  7. Physicians and surgeons – 0.8%
  8. Audiologists – 0.9%
  9. Earth drillers, except oil and gas – 0.9%
  10. Septic tank servicers and sewer pipe cleaners – 0.9%

In terms of “comeback” occupation of the year, here are the top ten (10) decreases in their respective unemployment rate from 2011 to 2012:

  1. Textile bleaching and dyeing, machine operators and tenders – 38.9% decrease
  2. Woodworking machine setters, operators, and tenders, except sawing – 23.0% decrease
  3. Animal control workers – 20.9% decrease
  4. Tank car, truck, and ship loaders – 16.1% decrease
  5. Cooling and freezing equipment operators and tenders – 14.7% decrease
  6. Helpers – installation, maintenance, and repair workers – 13.6% decrease
  7. Office machine operators, except computers – 13.0% decrease
  8. Helpers, construction trades – 12.3% decrease
  9. Bolermakers – 11.3% decrease
  10. Extruding, forming, pressing, and compacting machine setters, operators, and tenders – 11.0% decrease
